Mike Wheeler is in his third season as the head coach of the Missouri Southern golf team.
“Moving into this fall season I am pleased with the current roster and the prospects of an improved record in the MIAA. With the return on Senior Andy Hogenmiller along with the addition of Juniors Ryan Buerk and Elliot Soyez we are looking for some much better team numbers” Wheeler said.
Incoming Freshman Ethan Hutcheson, Ben Starkey, and Garrett Roberts join returners Adam Johnson, Ryan Russell, Andrew Maier, Fabian Oechsle, Ben Knight, and Gill Williams
Golf is an important part of Wheeler’s life. Wheeler is a past President of the Board of Directors at Twin Hills Golf & Country Club and has served as a Director in the Joplin Golf Foundation for the past eight years. During his time with the Joplin Golf Foundation Wheeler has served as chairperson of the Joplin Junior Golf “Tee It Up” program which offers golf instruction to more than 200 junior golfers annually. Prior to coming to Southern he was an assistant coach with the Joplin High School Lady Eagles golf team.
Wheeler has in recent years been heavily involved in administering the rules of golf. He has been a Director with the Missouri Golf Association for the past six years, working as a starter and rules official for the Missouri Junior Amateur and Missouri Junior Match Play events. He has five years experience as a rules official at the Missouri State High School Boys' Golf Championships and is a four-time attendee of the USGA Rules of Golf workshop.
Wheeler has two assistant coaches in Gary “Butch” Vernon and Taylor Griffith. Coach Vernon is also and member the Joplin Golf Foundation Board and assists with Joplin Junior Golf. Coach Griffith is a former MSSU Lion and is the assistant Golf Professional at Twin Hills Golf and Country Club.
