Volleyball falls 3-2 in heartbreaking loss at Lindenwood
St. Charles, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern volleyball team went up 2-1 on the road at Lindenwood, but Lindenwood won the final two sets of the match to win three sets to two. Individual set scores were 16-25, 26-24, 25-17, 14-25 and 12-25.
Southern (4-25, 0-15 MIAA) was led offensively by Katie Politte as the junior, just three weeks removed from a serious thumb injury, had 16 kills and three blocks in the match. Callie Whetstone had 12 kills and eight blocks, while Abby Finder dished out 19 assists. Payton Graves had ten kills, while Danielle Severns and Nai Montano had 11 and 10 digs, respectively.
Lindenwood (9-19, 6-8 MIAA) was led by Megan Dillon's 14 kills, while Kayla Guyot added 12 kills of her own.
Lindenwood led from start to finish in the first set, but the second set was the opposite. There were ten tied scores and four lead changes, but Southern took a 22-19 lead late in the set. Lindenwood came back and had set point at 24-23, but Southern scored three-straight points to take the set.
Southern led from start to finish in the third set, opening up a 9-3 lead early on. The Lions led 19-9 and 21-11, and a late rally from Lindenwood wouldn't be enough.
Lindenwood returned the favor in the fourth set, leading from the first serve and forcing the fifth set. The final set was tied at four, but Lindenwood led 8-6 at the turn. The Lions got as close as one (12-11) late, but Lindenwood scored three of the final four points to take the match.
Southern hit .215 as a team and had ten team blocks to Lindenwood's four.
MSSU will be back in action this Saturday when the Lions finish up the regular season at Pittsburg State. First-serve of the Sonic Trophy Series match is slated for 6:30 pm.
