Kearney, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern volleyball team fell victim to a good-hitting Nebraska-Kearney program today as the ninth ranked Lopers defeated the Lions three sets to none. Individual set scores were 18-25, 5-25 and 14-25.
The Lions (4-19, 0-10 MIAA) came out competitively in the first set, leading 3-1 early on. The Lopers (21-3, 7-2 MIAA) took a 10-4 lead midway through, but the Lions cut the lead to three (15-12), before UNK went on a 3-0 run to extend the lead to 18-12. The Lions got as close as four (19-14), but couldn't get any closer.
The second set was all Lopers. UNK hit .765 in the set and after the Lions tied the set at three on an ace from Danielle Severns, the Lopers reeled off 13-straight points to go up 16-3. The lead would be 19-4 and UNK would go on to win the set 25-5.
UNK hit .406 in the third set and led 10-4 early on, before the Lions got to within four at 13-9 on a kill from Payton Graves. The Lopers pushed the lead to 21-11, before a service error from UNK made the score 21-12. The Lopers scored four of the final six points to take the set.
Graves led the Lions with five kills and a block. Nai Montano had five kills of her own, hitting .667 for the match, while Abby Finder dished out 19 assists. Mikayla Avery had 12 digs, while Sydney Wheeler had seven of her own.
The Lopers were led by 11 kills from MJ Massanet and 33 assists from Erin Seele.
The Lions will be back in action on Tuesday when Southern plays host to third ranked Central Missouri at 7 pm in Young Gymnasium. The match will be senior night for both Nai Montano and Erin Rice and will also be the Lions' Spike or Treat evening.
Note ... The previously scheduled match on Nov. 3 to resume play against Southern Arkansas from the UAM Tournament has been cancelled due to scheduling issues with both schools. The match will be declared a no-contest and will not be made up.
