Joplin, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern volleyball team led late in the final two sets, but Northwest Missouri came-from-behind in each set and defeated the Lions in three sets tonight. Individual set scores were 16-25, 22-25 and 22-25.
Southern (5-25, 3-15 MIAA) was led offensively by Rachel Olinyk as the senior had nine kills in the match. Sydney Potts dished out 28 assists, while Elin Skei had a team-high 10 digs. Danielle Severns added eight digs, while Casey Ball and Katie Pollite had seven and six kills, respectively.
Northwest (14-17, 8-10 MIAA) was led by 11 kills from Abby Graves. Laira Aikin dished out 29 assists and Tori Beckman had a match-high 14 digs.
The first set was all Northwest as the Bearcats opened up the set with a 6-1 run and led 13-4 at one point. The lead was 22-12 before Northwest scored three of the final seven points to take the set.
In the second set, the Lions led 22-20 late, forcing a Northwest timeout, but the Bearcats went on a 5-0 run to take the set. In the finale, Southern led 20-18, but the Bearcats scored seven of the final nine points to take the match.
The Lions said goodbye to three seniors on this year's squad as Olinyk, Skei and Amber Heiskell played their final match.
