Lions fall in four sets at home to Truman State

Joplin, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern volleyball team hung tight in the first set and took the third set, but couldn't take out Truman State as the Bulldogs won three sets to one tonight at Young Gym. Individual set scores were 17-25, 14-25, 25-21, and 17-25. 

Southern (5-24, 3-14 MIAA) was led offensively by Rachel Olinyk as the seniro had 21 kills on the night. Elin Skei and Rocky Crook had 14 digs each, while Sydney Potts dished out 39 assists. 

Truman (20-13, 9-8 MIAA) had three players with double-figure kills, led by 14 from Molly Sinclair. 

The match featured 16 tied scores and nine lead changes, with the first set seeing five ties and three different leaders. Truman got out to a 12-6 lead in the second set, forcing a Southern timeout and the score was 17-7 before another MSSU timeout. The lead was 20-10 as the Lions scored four out of the final nine points in the set. 

Southern and Truman traded points for the first ten scores, but the Lions opened up a 13-10 lead after back-to-back kills from Casey Ball, forcing a Truman timeout. They would hold that lead throughout, despite Truman getting as close as two late at 21-19. 

Both teams again traded points early in the fourth set, before Truman opened up an 11-7 lead to force a Southern timeout. The lead was 19-12 in favor of Truman before another Lions timeout and the Bulldogs finished out the match on a 6-5 run. 

The Lions will finish the regular season tomorrow night with a 7 pm match against Northwest Missouri. The Lions will honor their three seniors (Rachel Olinyk, Amber Heiskell and Elin Skei) with senior night in Young Gymnasium.
