Hays, Kan. -- The Missouri Southern volleyball team fell in three sets tonight at Fort Hays State in MIAA action. Individual set scores were 16-25, 19-25, 19-25.
Southern (5-21, 3-11 MIAA) was led offensively by Rachel Olinyk with 12 kills and a .206 attack average. Casey Ball had a team-high 12 digs, while Katie Collins added 11 of her own. Sydney Potts dished out 26 assists and added five digs.
Hays (16-13, 4-10 MIAA) was led by a pair of double-figure kill performances from Yadira Jacquez and Madison Schwartz. Kayla Zoglman had a double-double with 32 assists and 15 digs.
The first set featured one tied score at 1-1, but Hays scored the next point and led from there out. The second set had three tied scores and two lead changes. Hays led 4-2 early in the set, but the Lions came back and scored three straight points to lead 5-4. The Tigers, then scored four-straight points to lead 8-5 and Hays wouldn't look back.
Southern started the third set on a 4-1 run and led 5-2 after a kill from Ball. Hays tied the set at five and again at six, before going on an 8-0 run to lead 14-6. Southern got to within three points (21-18), forcing a Fort Hays timeout, but the Tigers woult score four of the next five points to take the set.
Southern will be back in action tomorrow, when they face off with Emporia State.
