Southern volleyball drops a pair of matches in Pitt State Tournament

Pittsburg, Kan. -- The Missouri Southern volleyball team dropped a pair of matches today, falling 3-1 to West Texas A&M in the opener and then 3-0 to Midwestern State in the finale at the Pittsburg State Regional Volleyball Challenge. 

Southern (3-13) ran into a hot hitting West Texas squad (16-1) as the Lady Buffs hit .419 in the match, including .706 in the fourth set. Individual set scores were 10-25, 25-23, 9-25 and 8-25. 

Casey Ball and Rachel Olinyk both had 11 kills and hit .103 in the match. Rocky Crook had a match-high 13 digs, while Sydney Potts dished out 24 assists. 

In the finale, Midwestern State (10-6) hit .333 as a team and took out the Lions in straight sets. Individual set scores were 25-27, 18-25 and 22-25. 

Ball led the Lions with 14 kills and 11 digs, while hitting .243 in the match. Elin Skei had 11 kills and 10 digs, while Potts added 30 assists and 10 digs. Katie Collins had 11 digs. 

The Lions will be back in action next Friday, Oct. 7, playing host Fort Hays at 7 pm from Young Gymnasium.
