Lions fall at home to 8th ranked Central Missouri, 3-0

Joplin, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern volleyball team ran into a hot-hitting Central Missouri squad tonight and fell 3-0 to the eighth ranked Jennies at Young Gymnasium. Individual set scores were 12-25, 19-25, and 20-25. 

The Lions (3-9, 1-3 MIAA) hit just .069 in the first set, while Central (9-2, 3-0 MIAA) hit .526 in the opener. With the exception of a 1-1 tie early on, the Jennies led throughout and took the first set. 

Southern kept it close in the second set, hitting .312 and never trailing by more than two up until the 20th point when UCM went on a 6-2 run to win the set. 

The third set featured 13 tied scores and seven lead changes and the Lions led 10-8 after a kill from Danielle Severns. Central, however, scored the next three points before a Jennies' attack error tied the set at 11. Southern led again at 19-17, but UCM went on an 8-1 run to end the match. 

Rachel Olinyk led the Lions offensively with 11 kills and a.667 attack average. Katie Politte had 10 kills, while Sydney Potts dished out 30 assists and Rocky Crook had a team-high 10 digs. 

The Lions will be back in action next weekend, taking part in the Pittsburg State Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
