Dallas, Texas -- The Missouri Southern volleyball team dropped a pair of matches in the opening day of the 2011 Dallas Baptist Patriot Invitational, falling in five to West Alabama and in four to Midwestern State (Texas).
The Lions (1-5) dropped the first match of the day, but made it intersting when after trailing two games to none, they responded to win games three and four, before eventually falling in the fifth and final set. Individual set scores were 22-25, 22-25, 26-24, 25-14 and 13-15.
Rachel Olinyk hit .351 in the match with 18 kills, while Katie Politte had 17 kills and 17 digs. Casey Ball had 13 kills and 21 digs, while Sydney Potts dished out 54 assists. Rocky Crook had 14 digs, while Elin Skei missed a double-double by just one kill (nine kills and 10 digs). Southern hit just .095 and .089 in games one and twl, but hit .244 in game three and .414 and .389 in games four and five.
West Alabama (5-0) stayed undefeated with the win.
In the Lions' second match of the day, Southern lost three to one against Midwestern State (5-1). Individual set scores were 15-25, 25-23, 30-32 and 18-25.
Politte had 15 kills and seven digs, while Bell had a double-double with 16 kills and 15 digs. Crook and Skei added 18 and 12 digs, while Potts dished out 45 assists and had 10 digs.
The Lions will be back in action tomorrow with an 11:15 am match against East Central (Okla.) and a 6 pm match against the host Dallas Baptist.
