Joplin, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern volleyball program dropped a pair of matches today in day one of the 2011 MSSU Volleyball Invitational, falling 3-1 to both Quincy and Central Oklahoma.
Southern (0-2) fought back from a 2-0 deficit against Quincy in the first match of the day to win 25-16 in the third set, but fell just short in the fourth set, 25-23. Individual set scores were 14-25, 21-25, 25-16, and 23-25.
Rachel Olinyk led the Lions with eight kills, while Amber Heiskell had seven kills and hit .500 for the match. Elin Skei dished out 28 assists and Sydney Potts had ten digs. The Lions had 14 team blocks as Danielle Severns had seven and Katie Politte added eight.
In the second match, the Lions had set point in two different sets, but couldn't pull out the game and fell to UCO. Individual set scores were 27-29, 25-14, 24-26, and 25-19.
Olinyk again led the Lions, this time with 15 kills. Skei had 35 assists, while Rocky Crook added ten digs. UCO had 13 blocks in the match to the Lions' five.
Southern will be back in action tomorrow with two matches Harding (noon) and Newman (6 pm).
