Joplin, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern volleyball team excelled offensively tonight and dispatched of visiting Fort Hays State three games to none. Individual set scores were 25-21, 25-17 and 25-17.
Southern (16-12, 6-10 MIAA) was led offensively by Rachel Olinyk's 12 kills as the junior hit .318 in the match. Ashlee Russell and Jeanna Feldmann had nine and eight kills, respectively. Elin Skei dished out 33 assists, while Feldmann and Shakila Balkhi had 11 digs each.
Fort Hays (7-21, 0-16 MIAA) got seven kills each from Madison Schwards and Makayla McPhail.
The first set featured eight ties and two lead changes, but the Lions took control at 17-16 on a kill from Olinyk. The second set had three ties and two lead changes, but Southern utilized a 6-0 run early on to take a 11-5 lead and cruised for the remainder of the set. Fort Hays opened up the third set with a 4-1 lead, but the Lions fought back to tie the set at four. The set was tied again at seven, eight, nine, ten and eleven, but the Lions took a 12-11 lead and never looked back.
Southern will be back in action tomorrow afternoon when the Lions play host to Emporia State at 2 pm.
