Lions fall in straight sets at seventh-ranked Central Missouri

Warrensburg, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern volleyball team dropped a straight-set match at seventh-ranked Central Missouri tonight 3-0. Individual set scores were 25-18, 25-10,  and 25-13.

Southern (14-9, 4-9 MIAA) was led offensively by Brittany Vavao-Huggins as the senior had eight kills and no assists with a .571 attack average. Amelia Judge had seven kills and four blocks, while Elin Skei dished out 20 assists.

Central Missouri (21-3, 11-1) was led offensively by Abby Gruenbacher with 12 kills and an .800 attack average.

The Lions took a 4-2 lead early in the first set before the Jennies stormed back to tie it and eventually take a 7-4 lead before a Southern point stopped the UCM run. The Lions got to within one at 9-8, but a 13-6 run made the score 22-14 and the Jennies went on to win the opening set.

Central opened up a 9-2 lead to start the second set and the lead grew to 15-5, before a couple of points for the Lions made the score 15-7. Southern scored two more to get within ten at 19-9, but the Jennies closed out the set on a 10-2 run.

Both teams traded points in the third set, but a 3-0 run after the set was tied at ten gave Central a 13-10 lead midway through. The lead would grow to 22-14 for the Jennies, before five straight points for the Lions forced a Missouri Southern timeout at 22-19. The Lions scored a point out of the timeout to cut the lead to two (22-20) but split the final six points and the Jennies took the match.

Southern will be back in action a week from tonight with a 7 pm match at Truman State.
