Joplin, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern volleyball team hung tough, but couldn't overcome sixth ranked Washburn as the Lady Blues defeated the Lions in three sets tonight. Individual set scores were 21-25, 22-25 and 18-25.
Southern (11-6, 1-3 MIAA) was led offensively by Rachel Olinyk as the junior hit .350 with 10 kills and three blocks. Ashlee Russell had six kills, while Renee Rheinecker, Amelia Judge and Haley Martin had five kills each. Russell added 11 digs and six blocks, while Judge had six blocks and Shakila Balkhi had 12 digs. Elin Skei had a match-high 28 assists.
Washburn (17-1, 5-1 MIAA) was led offensively by Breanna Lewis with 13 kills and a .440 attack average.
All together, the match had 18 tied scores and 10 lead changes. Southern had nine team blocks and held Washburn to a .218 attack average.
The Lions will be back in action this weekend when they travel to Fort Hays on Friday and Emporia State on Saturday.
