Lions sweep final two matches of Crossover
Joplin, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern volleyball team swept a pair of matches in the final day of the 2010 Missouri Southern Crossover, defeating both Texas Woman's and Newman by identical 3-0 scores.
Southern (11-5) went 3-1 in the tournament with its only loss coming to 9th ranked Central Missouri.
In the Lions first match of the day, Southern won by the scores of 25-19, 25-18 and 25-15. The Lions first set was highlighted by two separate serving stints from Elin Skei as the junior served out seven straight points early in the set and the final four points of the set.
Southern trailed only once in the second set and after leading 3-2 early on, the Lions led throughout the rest of the set. The final set saw just one tie and the Lions led throughout.
Amelia Judge led the Lions offensive attack with eight kills and a .438 attack average. Both Rachel Olinyk and Ashleey Russell hit over .300 and had nine kills, while Skei dished out 30 assists. Shakila Balkhi had 11 digs.
In Southern's second match, the Lions swept Newman, but went to extra points in each set. Individual set scores were 27-25, 26-24, 29-27.
The Lions were led again by Judge as the senior had ten kills, hit .625 and added nine blocks. Olinyk added ten kills and five blocks, while Skei and Merrick had 21 and 13 assists, each. Balkhi added in 14 digs.
The Lions will be back in action this Tuesday, when Southern plays host to Washburn at 7 pm in Young Gym.
