Lions sweep their way to victory in day two at Quincy

Quincy, Ill. -- Missouri Southern volleyball team moved to 4-0 this season after back-to-back sweeps today over Alderson Broaddus and St. Joseph's (Ind) in the final day of the Quincy University Tournament.

Southern (4-0) won the opener by the scores of 25-21, 25-15, and 28-26. They hit .305 as a team with 54 digs, 40 kills and 7 blocks. 

Individually the Lions were led by Rachel Olinyk, with 13 kills and .435 attack average.  Ashlee Russell had 13 kills of her own and hit .444 while collecting 8 digs. Jeanna Feldmann and Shakila Balkhi had and 10 and 11 digs, respectively, while Elin Skei and Daphne Merrick had 24 and 10 assists each.

In the Lions' second match of the day they defeated St. Joseph's by the scores of 25-18, 15-16 and 25-17. Southern offensively out-gunned SJC htting .345 as a team, including an amazing .607 in game two, while limiting their opponent to just a .112 attack average. The Lion's had 48 kills, 37 digs and 6 blocks in the match. 

Olinyk again led the offensive attack this time with 14 kills and .600 attack average. Brittany Vavo-Huggins had 12 kills and hit .562, while Renee Rheinecker added 9 kills of her own. Balkhi had 11 digs and Skei dished out 35 assists.  

The Lions will be back in action next weekend when they travel to Austin, TX to compete in the St. Edwards Invitational.
