Hays, Kan. -- The Missouri Southern volleyball team rebounded from a 2-1 deficit and hit .345 and .320 over the final two sets to defeat Fort Hays State three sets to two tonight in Hays. Individual set scores were 20-25, 26-24, 24-26, 25-18 and 15-12.
Southern (13-17, 6-10 MIAA) had a hard time finding the offensive swing for the first three sets and despite hitting .022 in the third set, nearly missed having a 2-1 advantage of their own after forcing extra points in the set. Fort Hays (7-24, 3-14 MIAA), however, scored the final three points of the set to go up 2-1.
The Lions came alive in the final two sets. After trailing 9-8 to start the set, Southern went on a 13-6 run capped off by a kill from Renee Rheinecker to make the Lions' advantage 21-13. Kills from Amber Heiskell and Rheinecker wrapped up the fourth set.
Hays scored the first point of the final set on a Southern serving error, but back-to-back points gave the Lions a 2-1 lead and they wouldn't trail from that point on. A block from Heiskell and Maria Weller sealed the match for the Lions.
Weller led the offensive attack for Southern with 15 kills and a .364 attack average. She added four blocks, as well. Rheinecker had 15 kills of her own, while Heiskell had 12 blocks and five kills. Jeanna Feldmann nearly missed a double-double with nine kills and a team-high 15 digs. Daphne Merrick had a double-double with 42 assists and 11 digs, while Ali Boehler and Kari Hammerbacher had 10 digs each.
The Lions will be back at it tomorrow evening as they travel to Emporia State to take on the seventh ranked Hornets at 7 pm.
