Despite late rally, Lions fall in five games at Rockhurst

Kansas City, Mo. -- Despite rallying to win the third set and dominating the fourth set, the Missouri Southern volleyball team fell on the road tonight, losing three sets to two at Rockhurst in Kansas City. Individual set scores were 23-25, 22-25, 26-24, 25-15 and 5-15.

Southern (10-14) hung in with Rockhurst (15-11) but lost the first two sets by a total of five points.

The Lions, however, responded and after trading points with the Hawks in the set, took a 23-22 lead on a kill from Jeanna Feldmann and scored five of the final eight points.

The fourth set was all Lions. Southern raced out to a big lead and behind two different runs of five points each and another of four points, led 24-6, and looked for a huge fourth set win. The Hawks, however, had different ideas as Rockhurst scored nine straight points, before a kill from Feldmann ended the set.

That momentum for Rockhurst carried over into the fifth set, as the Hawks led 8-3 at the turn and took the set 15-5. In all, the Lions opened the fourth set with a 24-6 run and with the nine points at the end of the set, coupled with the 15 in the fifth, Rockhurst finished the match on a 24-6 run of its own.

Renee Rheinecker led the Lions' offensive barrage with 19 kills and a .405 attack average. Feldmann had 13 kills and seven digs, while Elin Skei dished out 56 assists. Kari Hammerbacher and Ali Boehler had 17 and 15 digs, respectively.

Southern will be back in action tomorrow night when the Lions travel to Omaha to take on 16th ranked Nebraska-Omaha at 7 pm.
