Hays, Kan. - With heavy rain and lighting in the area, the Missouri Southern Lions soccer team tied Fort Hays State 1-1 tonight as lighting caused the second and final overtime session to be canceled at FHSU Soccer Stadium.
With the match scoreless as the two teams neared halftime, the Tigers (3-5-1, 0-2-1 MIAA) would get the game's first goal in the 45th minute as freshman midfielder Hannah Jurgens would score from the center of field for her first goal of the year.
The Lions (2-3-2, 1-0-2) would fight back in the second half notching game at 1-1 in the 77th minute as junior forward Katelyn Roberson would score her team-high third goal of the year as sophomore forward Karley Thomas would collect her team-high fifth assist on a cross that would set up Roberson's goal from midfield. Southern would fire off six shots in the second half after only getting two in the first half.
Junior goalkeeper Beth Hammons would play all 100 minutes of the match making three saves on the evening.
Southern returns to action Sunday afternoon traveling to Nebraska-Kearney to face the Lopers (3-4, 0-2) at 1 p.m. at Ron and Carol Cope Stadium at Foster Field.
