St. Joseph, Mo. - The Missouri Southern Lions soccer team suffered a heartbreaking 1-0 loss in overtime at Missouri Western tonight.
With no scoring in regulation and coming within 1:03 of forcing a second overtime, the Griffons (6-9-1, 4-7-1 MIAA) notched the game- winning goal in the 98th minute when Western's Abby Widrig scored from the left side of the field twenty yards out.
Outshooting the Griffons 21-12 on the night, including 14 in the second half, the Lions (4-9-3, 4-5-2) had their second highest single game shot output of the year. The Lions spread the wealth of shots around as seven players got two or more shots off. The Lions were led by senior midfielder Alicia Vonderheid and senior forward Natascha Lord who fired off four and three shots, respectively.
Playing in cold, windy conditions, the Lions put the pressure on Western in the last four minutes of regulation getting off five shots. Firing off four more shots in the overtime session, the Lions were unable to get one on net.
The Lions conclude MIAA conference play on Sunday afternoon at Northwest Missouri State (8-5-3, 6-3-2). Kickoff from Bearcat Pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
