Joplin, Mo.- The Southern Lions soccer team kicks off their home schedule this weekend when they host games Friday evening and Sunday afternoon against Southern Nazarene University and Abilene Christian University at Hal Bodon Field.
The Lions are coming off a opening weekend that saw them go 0-1-1. They tied UMSL 2-2 last Friday evening before falling to Quincy Univeristy 4-1 on Sunday. Senior forward Megan Stueve, the Lions top returning scorer, tallied a goal in each game to lead the Lions in scoring on the weekend.
The Southern Nazarene Crimson Storm enter Friday's matchup with a 2-1 overall record with wins over Trevecca Nazarene (Tenn.) and Bacone Colllege. Their lone loss on the season came in their season opener when they fell 2-0 against Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) Friday's game kickoffs at 7pm.
The Abilene Christian Wildcats enter this weekend's action with a 1-1 record. Opening the season ranked #7 in the country, the Wildcats dropped their season opener with a 2-0 defeat at #9 Dallas Baptist. They returned home to beat Our Lady of the Lake University (Texas) 1-0. Coming off a year that saw them go 20-2-1 and advance to the NCAA Tournament Elite Eight, the Wildcats will give the Lions a great early season test. Sunday's game starts at noon. Before taking on the Lions Sunday, the Wildcats will play the University of Nebraska-Kearney Lopers Friday afternoon at 4pm at Hal Bodon Field.
