Joplin, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern Lions (6-9-1, 6-2-0 MIAA) held off a late surge by Northwest Missouri State (9-5-2, 5-3-0 MIAA) to end regulation on the first overtime for a 2-1 victory in Joplin Thursday night. The win secures the third seed in the MIAA Post-season Tournament for the Lions.
Southern's first goal came in the 69th minute as senior Lindi Spilchen scored her second goal of the season of a touch from junior Corinne Tebbs at midfield. Spilchen then beat the Bearcats goalie in a 1v1 situation.
Northwest would answer back in the 87th minute as Tammie Eiberger scored off of a free kick by Elizabeth Walde.
Southern then shut down Northwest in both overtimes as freshman redshirt Samantha Zoltanski connected on a cross pass from senior Megan Stueve to give the Lions the win just 1:37 into the final overtime.
Southern will be back in action against future MIAA foe, Lindenwood University, on Sunday with a noon start and will travel to Kansas City, Missouri for the MIAA Post-Season Tournament on Thursday November 3rd as the number three seed.
