Lions Soccer Downs Lady Blues 2-0, moves to 4-1 in MIAA

Topeka, Kan. – The Lions (4-7-1, 4-1 MIAA) struck early, scoring a goal in the 11th minute and then added an insurance goal in the 75th minute as they downed the host Lady Blues of Washburn University(1-10-2, 1-3-1 MIAA) 2-0 Tuesday night in Topeka, Kan.

The Lions struck early in the first half, capitalizing on their third corner kick of the game in the 11th minute as junior Cortney Sanders headed in the kick from junior Corinne Tebbs.  In the first 45 minutes of play senior Randi Russell led the Lions' defense that allowed just one shot on goal in just three shots.

Junior Megan Stueve added her fourth goal of the season tying senior Shannon Kuhn for the team points lead with 9 points, to give the Lions a 2-0 lead with 15:00 left to play in the match. 

Sophomore goalkeeper Abby Risner came up big stopping three Lady Blues' shots in the second stanza of play.  In addition to two shots and a corner kick in the last 15 minutes of play after Southern scored their second goal of the game.

Missouri Southern will be back in action Saturday October 15 as they host the Griffons of Missouri Western State University in a MIAA match at 6pm at Hal Bodon Field in Joplin, Mo.
