Last-second shot lifts Southwest Baptist over Lions, 61-59

Bolivar, Mo. -- A layup and a free-throw from Southwest Baptist lifted the Bearcats over Missouri Southern today 61-59 at the Meyer Sports Center in Bolivar. 

The Lions (6-13, 2-11 MIAA) had a three point lead at the half (30-27) and led by as many as six late in the game (59-53) with 1:18 left to go. SBU, however, got a three pointer from Jacqui Zelenka to cut the lead to three (59-56) with a minute left and a layup from Brittney Dukes with 37 seconds left made the score 59-58. 

That gave the Lions the ball with just under 30 seconds left, however a turnover by the Lions led to a layup from Zalenka and the accompanying free-throw lifted SBU (8-10, 4-9) over the Lions. 

The Lions were led in scoring by Erin Rice as the junior had 22 points on 10-17 shooting. She added four rebounds and three steals. Haley Weathers and Shatara Stone had nine points each. 

Zalenka led the Bearcats with 19 points and six rebounds, while Dukes scored 15. LaKendra Smith scored nine points and added 10 rebounds. 

The Lions shot 51 percent from the field and forced 16 SBU turnovers, scoring 18 points off of the miscues. Southern out scored SBU 40-24 in the paint and had a 22-14 advantage in bench points. 

Southern will be back in action on Wednesday evening, traveling to Jefferson City to take on Lincoln at 5:30 pm.
