Joplin, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern Lions Women's Basketball team (4-4, 0-2 MIAA) took a five point lead into halftime but it wasn't enough to out last the 25th ranked Central Missouri Jennies (7-0, 2-0 MIAA) Saturday afternoon, 66-50, in Warrensburg, Missouri.
The Lions were led by junior forward Erin Rice with 10 points and six rebounds, while the Jennies were led by Nicole Caddell with 24 points and 10 boards.
Southern held the Jennies to just 23.5 percent (8-of-34) shooting from the field in the first half while the Lions went 10-for-25 (40.0 percent) and took a 28-23 lead into the locker room. The Lions dominated the first half of play taking the lead over at the 17:13 mark on a layup by Rice and then extended their lead to as much as seven three times over the next seven minutes on layups by junior guard Tatianna Washington and three points by sophomore guard Shatara Stone and sophomore forward Jessica Bell.
Central Missouri came out of halftime on a 14-1 lead and took the lead for good at the 17:46 mark on a layup by Shaquanda Wiggins. The Jennies would then slowly extend their lead to 18 points with 1:18 left to play in the game at 63-45 on a free throw by Caddell.
Southern was out rebounded by the Jennies 46-35 for the game and Central came out on fire in the second half shooting 59.3 percent (16-of-27) from the field while allowing Southern to shoot just 26.7 percent (8-for-30) in the second stanza.
The Lions will travel to Missouri Western on Wednesday December 7 for their next MIAA game, with tip off set for 5:30 pm in St. Joseph.
