Lions Women Pull Away Late for 62-53 Win Over Fort Hays State

Hays, Kan. - The Missouri Southern women's basketball squad (15-9, 13-7 MIAA) pulled away late from the Fort Hays Tigers (12-12, 9-11) for a 62-53 win Saturday afternoon in Hays, Kan.  The win clinches a spot for the Lions in the MIAA Post-Season Tournament in Kansas City, Mo. March 3-6.

Southern got a career-high 18 points from senior Afton Baldwin, as senior Jasmine Lovejoy and sophomore Erin Rice both added 13 points each.

All 18 points for Baldwin came from three-point land (6-of-14), also a career-high.

After a cold shooting first half, 8-for-29 for 27.6 percent, the Lions poured it on Fort Hays State in the second half going 12-of-20 from the field for 60 percent.  For the game Southern finished 20-of-49, 40.8 percent, from the field.

Despite the cold first half the Lions went into the locker room with a 27-22 lead and would only give up two ties in the second half before making a 12-2 run that included back-to-back threes from Baldwin, a lay-up from Lovejoy, and a pair of free-throws from sophomore Kelby Fritz.  Rice would hit two more free-throws to expand the lead to 12 at 62-50 with 0:16 left to play.

The Lions will return home to the friendly confines of The Leggett & Platt Athletic Center on Wednesday, February 23, to take on the Mavericks of the University of Nebraska at Omaha.  That game is scheduled for a 5:30 pm start.
