Joplin, Mo. -- A three-point play from Erin Rice at the end of regulation sent the game into overtime and the Lions came through, taking out visiting Southwest Baptist, 66-61 tonight in overtime at the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.
Southern (11-7, 9-5 MIAA) was led in scoring by LaTice Jones with 19 points and nine rebounds. Jasmine Lovejoy scored 16 and had a game-high 11 rebounds, while Kelby Fritz and Erin Rice had nine points each.
SBU (7-10, 4-9 MIAA) was led in scoring by Courtney HEady with 16 points, while Lakendra Smith scored 14.
The Lions trailed by five (58-43) after a jumper from Smith with 2:35 left in the game, before Southern went on a 5-0 run capped off by a three from Afton Baldwin to tie the game for the seventh time of the night.
Rice's driving layup with 17 seconds cut the SBU lead to one (51-50) and the free-throw tied the game and sent it into overtime. The Lions jumped out to a six-point lead in the overtime frame after a freebie from Fritz and a pair of free-throws from Fritz with 20 seconds left sealed the win.
The Lions shot 41 percent on the night and held SBU to just 34 percent from the field. Southern held a 40-24 advantage in the paint and scored 14 points off of 19 SBU turnovers.
The Lions will be back in action on Wednesday night, traveling to Jefferson City to take on Lincoln University.
