Joplin, Mo. - The Missouri Southern Lions (3-3, 1-1 MIAA) used a 17-0 run in the middle of the first half to help run the Jennies of Central Missouri (5-3, 1-1 MIAA) out of Leggett & Platt Athletic Center in Joplin, winning 74-62.
Senior Jasmine Lovejoy and sophomore Erin Rice led the way for the Lions during that strech of just over six minutes as they scored five and seven points, respectively. Sophomore Kelby Fritz added a three pointer from Rice and junior Larrita Gipson added two free throws and an assist to Rice.
The Lions went into the lockeroom with a one point lead and came out in the second half fired up and went on another run this time an 8-0 run, going up 40-32 at the 16:53 mark of the second half, and put the game away with another 16-3 run, to go up 57-37 at the 11:06 mark of the second half.
For the game, the Lions went 22-of-58, 37.9 percent, from the field and improved on their free throw shooting, hitting 24-of-28 (85.7 percent).
Lovejoy recorded her second double-double of the season with 23 points and 10 rebounds. Meanwhile, Rice set a career record for points for the second time the season pouring in 20 points with six rebounds and five assits. Fritz came off the bench for Coach Maryann Mitts and scored 12 points, shooting 3-of-5 from behind the arc.
Lovejoy and Rice were both perfect from the charity stripe going eight-for-eight and seven-for-seven respectively.
The Lions host the Missouri Western State University Griffons next Wendesday at 5:30 pm in the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center before hosting Linclon University next Saturday, December 11. Those games on December 11 have been changed to a 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm start times.
