Fourth Lion establishes career best as Lions down Evangel 67-61

Joplin, Mo. - The fourth Lion this season, LaTice Jones, established a career high in points as the Lions defeat the Lady Crusaders (2-3) of Evangel University, 67-61.  Jones was also the fourth leading scorer for Coach Mitts and the Lions this season.

The Lions (2-2) came back from a 37-32 halftime deficit and used the career high by senior Jones and also got 20 points from senior Jasmine Lovejoy and 13 from sophomore Erin Rice.

Jones also set a new career high in rebounds with 12 as she led all participants in the contest.

After allowing Evangel to shoot 61.1 percent (11-of-18) from the field in the first half, the Lions defense tightened down the screws and forced Evangel into a six-for-22 (27.3 percent) performance from the field in the second half. 

The Lions took the lead for good at the 3:11 mark in the second half on a 3-pointer by Rice.

Southern outscored the Lady Crusaders 42-16 in the paint and 27-0 off the bench.

Lovejoy was voted Outstanding Player for the Classic and joining her on the All-Tournament team was junior Michelle Hedgecock and Jones from Southern, from Arkansas-Ft. Smith was Whitney Lee and Ashley Arnold, and Evangel's representative was Caitlin Russell.

The Lions open MIAA play this Wednesday on the road at Truman State University, tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 pm.  Kevin Greim will be on the air with the play-by-play action from Kirksville on 1230 AM The Talker, pre-game starts at 5:10 pm.
