Softball opens 2013 season at the Southeastern Regional Invitational Friday

Joplin, Mo. - The Missouri Southern Lions softball team kicks off the 2013 season on Friday at the Southeastern Regional Invitational hosted by Southeastern Oklahoma State in Durant, Okla.

One of the largest Division II softball tournaments in the country, this year's tournament features 16 schools from five different states in five different conferences. The Lions will play six games over three days at the Durant Multi-Sports Complex, including 2012 Great American Conference Champion Arkansas-Monticello on Sunday.

Picked to finish 11th in in the 2013 MIAA Preseason Coaches Poll, Southern is coming off a a 16-35 record a season ago, but the Lions return to the lineup 2011 All-MIAA selection in junior Dawn Grass. Grass was an honorable-mention selection in 2011 as she tied the school record with nine home runs in a single season. The Lions also return five starters and nine letterwinners from last season.

Saturday, February 9

MSSU vs. Drury - Noon

MSSU vs. Northeastern State (Okla.) - 2 pm

Sunday, February 10

MSSU vs. Arkansas- Monticello - 2 pm

MSSU vs. Henderson State (Ark.) - 4 pm
