Lions Drop Game 1 of Five State Classic

Bentonville, Ark. – The Missouri Southern Lions (1-8) stifled one Arkansas-Monticello (3-4) rally attempt in the third inning, but couldn't stifle the second attempt in the bottom of the seventh as the winning run was walked home, for the 1-0 win.

The Lions would amass only four hits, one each for seniors Breanna Volkmann and Lydia Niemegeers and sophomores Shelby Romines and Haley Pypes, as Southern stranded eight base runners and the Cotton Blossoms stranded nine.

Junior Hannah Cooke got the start in the circle and went the distance allowing just the one run on 6 2/3 innings with four strike outs.

The Lions will be back in action in the Five State Classic Friday morning as they play Missouri S&T at 12:30 pm and Missouri-St. Louis at 3 pm.
