Lions Softball Drops Double Header to Golden Suns
Russellville, Ark. – The Missouri Southern softball team (1-7) had two late rallies stopped by the Golden Suns to preserve the sweep for Arkansas Tech, 11-10 and 9-6, Tuesday evening in Russellville.
The Lions would take an early 2-0 lead as senior Brianna Fulkerson would double to left and then advance to third on a pass ball. After a walk and stolen base by senior Brooke Hurley, senior Lydia Niemegeers would connect for a two run double to center field.
Southern would add two more in the fourth as freshman Brooke Swadley would reach on a fielder's choice and then steal second. Swadley would then score on a single to right by senior Breanna Volkmann. Volkmann would move to second on a single to left by Fulkerson and then score on another single, this one by senior Alysha Poteat to left.
Arkansas Tech would put up six runs in the bottom frame of the fourth to take a 6-4 lead. The Lions would add one run in the top of the fifth to cut the lead to one, 6-5, before the Golden Suns would add two more to open a three run lead heading into the sixth inning.
In the visitors half of the sixth Missouri Southern would strike for two runs as Swadley would score on a ground out by Fulkerson and Volkmann would score on a wild pitch.
Tech would go down 1, 2, 3 in the home half of the sixth leaving the score 8-7 in favor of the Golden Suns.
The final frame saw the Lions connect for three more runs to take a 10-8 lead before Arkansas Tech would connect for three of their own to win on a walk off sacrifice fly.
Just like in game one the Lions would take an early lead, 3-0, as senior Alysha Poteat would walk with two outs and move to second on a pass ball. Senior Brooke Hurley would then walk to put runners on first and second. Both Poteat and Hurley would score on a double by senior Lydia Niemegeers. Niemegeers would advance to third on a single by sophomore Shelby Romines and score on a double by freshman Brooke Swadley.
The Golden Sun would then touch junior Hannah Cooke (0-3) for four runs in the bottom frame of the inning. The score would stay 4-3 before Arkansas Tech would add two runs in the fourth and three in the six to take a 9-3 lead going into the final frame.
Southern would mount a comeback bid as Hurley singled to left center to start the rally. Following a walk by Niemegeers, Hurley would score on a single by Romines. Both Romines and Niemegeers would advance an extra base on the throw home. Swadley would single up the middle to score Niemegeers and Romines would score on a fielding error by the Golden Suns' center fielder. Arkansas Tech would then make a pitching change and Horne would strike out two Lions before senior Breanna Volkmann would single to left to put runners at first and second with two outs. Horne would then get senior Brianna Fulkerson to pop out to the shortstop to end the game.
