Saint Joseph, Mo. - The Missouri Southern Softball squad (26-19, 9-7 MIAA) split a pair with sister school Missouri Western today in St. Joseph, Mo. The Lions won game one 7-0, and dropped the night cap 5-4 in 9 innings.
The Lions rode another outstanding pitching performance from junior Nicole Reed (20-5) as she went the full seven innings allowing just four hits while striking out nine and walked one Griffon. Reed now has 177 strike outs on the season, a new single season record. Reed eclipsed the previous record, held by former Lion Britany Hargis, yesterday in the win at No. 14-ranked Emporia State University.
Southern's offensive spark came from the top half of the line-up as hitters one through five were a combined 8-for-19 at the dish with all seven RBIs and five extra base hits. Senior Megan Roark went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a double and triple. Junior Brianna Fulkerson went 2-for-4 scoring three runs and added a double, while sophomores Jessica Brooks and Dawn Grass each connected for a double. Brooks batted in three Lions' runs while Grass knocked in two.
In the night cap Southern got off to a fast start converting two Griffon errors into three runs as freshman Brooklyn Farrell, who was pinch running for Grass after she reached on a double to right center, scored on a throwing error by the third baseman. Juniors Lydia Niemegeers and Alysha Poteat would then score on a single to center field by Fulkerson.
Missouri Western would then get the three runs back in the home halves of the fourth and fifth innings, to tie the game at 3-3 and stay that way to the eight inning.
In the top half of the eighth Grass led off with a home run to left field. Western would answer in the home half with a lead off home run as well. The Griffons would score the winning run in the bottom of the ninth with a walk off double off of Nicole Reed (20-6).
The Lions will be back in action on Tuesday April 26 as they head to Kirksville, Mo. for a make up MIAA double header against the Bulldogs of Truman State. Game time is set for 2pm. Southern will be back home for senior weekend as they host the Jennies of Central Missouri at 4pm on Friday April 29 and the Southwest Baptist University Bearcats at 2pm on Saturday April 30.
