Lions Softball Drops Final Two Games in Mathis-Zenner Memorial

Joplin, Mo. - The Missouri Southern Lions (9-7) closed out the Mathis-Zenner Memorial Classic with to losses against Central Oklahoma, 3-1, and Drury University, 8-4.

In game one against Central Oklahoma, the Broncos exploded for three runs in the fourth inning and held on late en route to a 3-1 victory over the Lions.

In the game for Southern, junior Nicole Reed (5-2) pitched a complete game allowing four hits and three earned runs while striking out eight. Offensively, the Lions were led by junior Brianna Fulkerson who went 3-for-4 with an RBI.

In game two against Drury, the Panthers got out to a quick 5-0 lead by the third inning before Southern would start a comeback.  The Lions would score two runs in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings to cut the lead to three, 7-4, and that would be the closest Southern would get.

Three Lions would go 1-for-3 at the plate, sophomore Jessica Brooks, senior Megan Roark, and junior Brooke Hurley.  Brooks would score two of the four Southern runs as well.

Senior Tiffany Bennett (3-4) started for the Lions and suffered the loss giving up five runs, three earned, and striking out two.  Freshman Shelby Romines and Nicole Reed both pitched two innings in relief.  Romines allowed two runs on four hits and struck out one, while Reed gave up one run on two hits and struck out four.

The Lions will host MIAA foe Pittsburg State on Wednesday for a single game starting at 5:00 PM.  This will be Southern's Pink Game sponsored by the Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority.
