Southern men strong in season opener
Joplin, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern men's track and field team opened up the indoor season with nine provisionals tonight at the MSSU Early Bird Open at the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.
Newcomer Evan Moore got things started winning both the shot put and the weight throw and picking up provisionals in each event. He threw 53-01.75 in the shot put, while hitting 56-09.50 in the weight throw. Seth Hackney was third in the shot put with a distance of 50-06.25.
Jayce Thomas picked up a win and a provisional in the high jump with a height of 6-08.25, while Michael Juergens picked up a provisional with a second place finish in the pole vault, clearing 15-06.25. Brady Melugin and Thomas were 5th and 7th in the event. Jacob Rowe and Darion Boure placed 6th and 9th in the long jump, while Boure won the triple jump with a huge provisional of 49-05, just an inch and a quarter off the MSSU school record. Thomas was third in the triple, while Rowe and Dominique Jenkins placed 6th and 9th, respectively.
Jazz Allen picked up a provisional and placed first in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.26, while Thomas was seventh, finishing in a time of 8.65. Jeff Fraley won the 60m dash in a provisional time of 6.87, while Erron Holley and Anthony Price placed 3rd and 7th, respectively. Fraley won the 200m with another provisional, finishing in a time of 22.13, while Holley was third in a provisional time of 22.60.
Price won the 400m dash in a time of 51.11, while Trey Dorsey placed third. Logan Garrett was second in the 800m in a time of 1:58.15, while Miles Migliara and Sam Pogue placed 4th and 5th. The Lions' 4x400m relay team of Allen, Price, Fraley and Dorsey placed fourth, while the DMR team of Migliara, Brandon Martin, Garrett and Pogue finished third.
Southern will be off for the rest of the month, but the Lions will pick back up on Jan. 11-12 hosting the MSSU Open Invitational.
