Joplin, Mo. -- Missouri Southern golf coach Mike Wheeler has announced the signing of Muskogee High School product Spencer Smythe to a national letter of intent to attend Southern and participate in golf beginning in the fall of 2014.
Smythe, a 6-2 righty, prepped at Muskogee High School for coach Jim Platter where he was a four-year letter winner. As a senior, Smythe finished fourth in the Oklahoma 6A State Championships at Karsten Creek Golf Club.
A two-time All-Conference selection, as well as an All-State selection this year, Smythe won the 2012 Jenks Invitational as a junior. During his senior campaign, Smythe won the Sand Springs Invitational, while placing second at his conference meet, as well as fifth at the State Preview. He qualified for the state tournament three times during his career.
Smythe is the son of Brad and Penny Smythe and is undecided on his future major at Southern.
"Spencer (Smythe) is a solid student-athlete coming from a quality golf program at Muskogee High School," Wheeler said. "He has good skills in every aspect of his game and I expect him to travel in the fall."
