Southern golf finishes ninth at Nebraska-Kearney Invite

Axtell, Neb. - The Missouri Southern golf team shot a 291 as a team today and finished ninth overall at the 2013 Nebraska-Kearney Fall Invite, held at Awarri Dunes GC. 

The 291 represents the lowest team total for a 54-hole event in the tenure of head coach Mike Wheeler. 

Two separate Lions posted under-par totals today as both junior Ryan Buerk and freshman Taylor Lansford shot a one-under 71. Buerk finished with a three-round total of 228, while Lansford carded a 230. 

The low round of the tournament, however, went to senior Andrew Maier as the Webb City native shot a 226 to finish tied for 27th individually. He finished the tournament with a 74. 

Senior Ryan Russell shot a 75 on the day to finish with a 239, while sophomore Ethan Hutcheson had an 80 to finish with a 243. 

Nebraska-Kearney won the tournament as they finished 14 strokes in front of second-place Lindenwood. Fort Hays was third, while Central Missouri and Central Oklahoma rounded out the top five team scores. 

Northeastern State was sixth, followed by Missouri Western, Midland University, Southern, Washburn, Pittsburg State, Lincoln and Southwest Baptist. 

The Lions will be in action on September 22 and 23 when Southern travels to St. Clouid, Minnesota to take place in the St. Cloud State Invite at St. Cloud Country Club.
