Southern golf finishes in fifth at First Federal Bank Invite

Hollister, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern golf team shot a 299 on the final day and finished in fifth place at the First Federal Invitational hosted by Henderson State University at Branson Creek Country Club. 

Junior Ryan Russell improved on his first-round 75 by shooting a 72 on the final 18 holes to finish five over and tied for seventh with a 147. Junior Andrew Maier improved by four strokes to shoot a second-round 74 and finished with a 152. 

Freshman Ben Starkey shot a 153, while junior Ryan Buerk shot a 155 and sophomore Adam Johnson carded a 155, as well. 

Henderson State won the team title with a two-day 586, seven strokes in front of second-place St. Cloud State. Newman shot a 291 today and placed third with a team total of 596, while Central Baptist (600) and the Lions (604) round out the top five teams. 

Sioux Falls was sixth, followed by Fort Hays, Rockhurst, Delta State and Murray State CC. 

The Lions will be back in action next week as Southern plays host to an MIAA points event on Monday and Tuesday at Twin Hills Golf and Country Club.
