Men's basketball opens up exhibition play with 83-66 loss at Division I Oral Roberts
Southern was led offensively by Talbert as the junior post went 7-16 from the field and added six rebounds and four assists. Addison was 2-4 from long range and 4-6 at the free-throw line, while Bryan Adams and Greg Renfroe added six points each. RJ Leverette had five points and four assists.
ORU was led by Shawn Glover and Steven Roundtree with 22 and 21 points, respectively. Warren Niles and Korey Billbury had 12 points each.
The Lions led 8-6 in the first half at the 14:20 mark when the Golden Eagles went on a 16-0 run and took a 22-8 lead after a layup from Glover with just under ten minutes left. Southern fought back and cut the lead to just four (29-25) with 2:21 left after a layup from Talbert. ORU would end the half on an 8-4 run and go into the locker room up 37-29.
Southern scored the first point of the second half on a free-throw from Leverette, but from that point, the Golden Eagles went on a 15-0 run to take a 52-30 lead with 14:21 left in the second half.
A pair of free-throws from Addison at the 13:50 mark stopped the run, but a three from ORU the next trip down made the score 55-32 with 13:20 left. That pair of freebies started a run for the Lions as a layup from Morgan Smith, a pair of free throws from Matt Everson, a three from Addison and another bucket from Smith capped off an 11-5 run for Southern and made the score 57-41.
The run for the Lions reached 17-5 as a fast break layup from Cameron Cornelius cut the Golden Eagles' lead to just 12 (61-49) with just under eight minutes left. A dunk from Talbert with 3:47 left in the game made the score, 73-55, ORU. The Lions would out score the Golden Eagles 11-10 over the final ten minutes to make the final tally, 83-66.
The Lions shot 43 percent from the field and forced 16 ORU turnovers, scoring 18 points off of the miscues. The Lions' bench out scored ORU 18-10.
Southern will be back in action this Sunday, when the Lions will travel to Columbia to take on Missouri at 2 pm from Mizzou Arena.
