St. Joseph, Mo. -- The 12th ranked Missouri Southern Lions took a 19-point lead into the locker room at the half and cruised to a 21-point win, defeating Missouri Western 83-62 tonight in St. Joseph.
Southern (18-2, 14-2 MIAA) finishes the season-sweep against the Griffons and along with the women (who won earlier in the night) sweep Missouri Western for the first-time ever in St. Joseph.
The Lions were led in scoring by both Skyler Bowlin and Keane Thomann as the pair had 19 points each. Bowlin added seven assists and three steals, while going 5-7 from long range. Thomann had a game-high eight rebounds on 9-13 shooting. Marquis Addison scored 14 and dished out seven assists, while Jason Adams added 11 points and dished out six assists. Rich Borries added a career-high ten points.
Western (9-11, 7-8 MIAA) was led in scoring by 15 points from TJ Johnson, while DaJuan Harris and Lavonte Douglas had 11 points each.
The Lions opened up an 11-point lead less than four minutes in when a three from Addison made the lead 14-3. The lead was 14 (41-27) with 2:38 left in the first half, but five-straight points from Bowlin to end the half gave the Lions a 19-point cushion going into the break.
Southern came out and put the Griffons away in the second half, as the Lions scored the first 16 points to start the half and led 62-27 after a layup from Thomann gave them a 35-point lead with 14:42 left in the game.
The Lions out rebounded Western 44-22 and held a 42-30 advantage in the paint. Southern shot 53 percent from the field and had 20 assists on 34 made baskets.
Southern will be back in action on Wednesday as the Lions head to Pittsburg State to take on the Gorillas in a Sonic Trophy Series matchup. Tip off is slated for 7:30 pm.
