Joplin, Mo. -- The 11th ranked Missouri Southern men's basketball team shot 65 percent from the field in the second half and 59 percent overall as the Lions took out Southwest Baptist 82-72 in front of more than 2,700 fans at the Leggett & Platt Athletic center in Joplin.
No. 11 Southern (16-2, 12-2 MIAA) takes possession of first place in the MIAA as Fort Hays lost earlier in the day at home to Northwest Missouri.
The Lions were led in scoring by Jason Adams with 30 points and eight rebounds while both Skyler Bowlin and Keane Thomann had 14. Kevin Hinsey scored ten points off the bench, going 5-5 from the field in 13 minutes of play.
SBU (9-10, 6-7 MIAA) was led in scoring with 17 points from Jacob French, while Stephen Cotten scored 13 and Zach Kliene scored 11.
Southern pushed its lead to nine points after a pair of free-throws from Adams made the score 47-38 with 16:37 left in the second half. The lead was 15 (64-59) after a layup from Adams with eight minutes left and a pair of freebies by Bowlin with 48 seconds to go gave the Lions the ten-point win.
SBU came into the game averaging over 12 three-pointers a game, but Southern held the Bearcats to just seven on the night.
Southern will be back in action on Wednesday night, traveling to Jefferson City for a matchup with Lincoln University at 7:30 pm.
