Joplin, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern men's basketball team used a 40-12 run over the final 13:27 of the game tonight and took out fifth ranked Fort Hays State, 82-64 at the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.
Southern (12-1, 8-1 MIAA) moves into first place by themselves with the win tonight. The Lions run in the second half also included a 22-0 run over a five minute stretch in the second half.
Southern was led offensively by Jason Adams with 25 points on the night. Kevin Hinsey had 15 points on 6-8 shooting off the bench tonight, while both Skyler Bowlin and Marquis Addison had ten points each. Bowlin added five steals, while TJ Williams dished out a career-high seven assists. Keane Thomann had a game-high ten rebounds.
Fort Hays (13-2, 7-2 MIAA) was led in scoring by Dominique Jones with 20 points. Dijon Smith scored 17, while Ken Bowman added 10.
The Lions led by ten (30-20) with 3:54 left in the first half, but Hays used a 12-2 run to tie the game tie the game at 32 with 16 seconds left. A pair of freebies from Bowlin gave the Lions a two-point halftime advantage.
Hays led by ten (52-42) at the 12:48 mark of the second half, before the Lions started their run. The next five minutes saw Southern utilize a 22-0 run to lead 64-52 with 7:42 left. The lead reached its peak (18) on the games final bucket, a layup from Bowlin.
Southern shot 44 percent from the field and 90 percent from the free throw line as Addison made all eight shots he took from the charity stripe, moving his streak of consecutive free-throws to 26. The Lions forced 20 turnovers, scoring 32 points off of the miscues. The Lions' bench out scored Hays, 25-8 and held the Tigers without a field goal for the final 4:01 of the game.
The Lions will be off this Wednesday and will head on the road taking on Nebraska-Omaha Saturday at 3:30 pm.
