Southern football picked 9th/8th in MIAA preseason polls

Kansas City, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern football program has been picked to finish ninth by the coaches and eighth by the media as the MIAA announced its annual preseason polls this morning as part of Football Media Day in the Downtown Marriott.

The Lions, 6-5 a season ago, finished eighth in the final MIAA standings and will bring back a team that could see as many 45 newcomers on the roster this year.

Southern returns five starters on offense, including four on the offensive line and one wide receiver. The defense returns seven starters from a season ago, including two on the defensive line, a linebacker and four defensive backs. In total, the Lions return 18 starters from 2012, but with an influx of newcomers, especially from the junior college arena, the number of new starters could be much higher.

Missouri Western and Northwest Missouri tied for top spots in the coaches poll as each team garnered six first-place votes. Pittsburg State picked up two first-place votes and was a preseason third place pick, while Central Missouri, Lindenwood, Washburn, Emporia State, Fort Hays, Southern, and Central Oklahoma round out the top ten spots. Northeastern State is 11th, followed by Nebraska-Kearney, Southwest Baptist and Lincoln.

In the media poll, Northwest Missouri edged out Western by just six points as each team took home ten first-place votes. Pittsburg State was again third, followed by Washburn, Lindenwood, Central Missouri, Emporia State, Missouri Southern and Fort Hays and Northeastern State to round out the top ten. Central Oklahoma, Nebraska-Kearney, Southwest Baptist and Lincoln placed 11th – 14th. Southern and Hays tied for 8th place in the media poll.

The Lions start the regular-season on Thursday, September 5 when they play host to Central Oklahoma at 6 pm inside Fred G. Hughes Stadium.
