Joplin, Mo. -- Axel Johnson went 3-5 with four RBIs and a run scored and the Missouri Southern baseball team completed the four-game sweep of visiting Southwest Baptist, defeating the Bearcats 8-2 today inside Joe Becker Stadium.
The Lions (18-12, 13-11 MIAA) sweep an MIAA opponent for the third time this season as the Lions also swept Fort Hays and Lincoln early on in the MIAA docket.
Matt Harvey started for the Lions and went three and a third innings, striking out two. Drew Noble threw four and two thirds in relief and picked up win number four, moving his overall record to 4-2 on the season. He struck out one and held the Bearcats (14-16, 11-12 MIAA) scoreless, while Stephen Vaughn threw the final inning, striking out one.
The Lions scored two runs in each of the second and third innings on RBI hits from Johnson as he picked up a double in the first and a single in the third. He scored Logan Moon and Evin Nattick in the first and drove in Moon and Beau Phillips in the third.
The Bearcats scored a pair in the fourth, but the Lions answered back with two in the fifth when Jared Lupo doubled home Robbe Ewing and Osburn. The Lions added two more in the seventh on a two-run home run from Ewing off the left field fair pole, scoring Johnson.
Ewing went 4-4 in the game with three singles and a homer. He drove in a pair and scored twice, as well. Moon went 2-4 with two runs scored, while Natick, Phillips, and Osburn scored, as well.
The Lions will be back in action this week with a non-conference game on Wednesday at 6 pm at Pittsburg State, then Southern will head to Northwest Missouri for an MIAA series next weekend.
