Baseball Lions sweep double-header at Lincoln

Jefferson City, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern baseball team swept a double-header today at Lincoln University, taking out the Blue Tigers, 5-3 and 6-2. 

Southern (6-0, 2-0 MIAA) got quality starts from both David Reese and Payton Walker, while Stephen Vaughn got a save in game one and Matt Harvey picked up a save in the nightcap. 

The Lions picked up a run in the top of the third in the opener on an RBI single from Logan Moon, scoring Austin White. Lincoln (0-4, 0-2 MIAA) answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning to go ahead 3-1, but a two-RBI single from White tied the score at three in the top of the fourth. Mitchell Osborn then picked up a two-RBI single of his own in the sixth, scoring Robbe Ewing and Brandon Weller for the final score. 

Moon went 2-4, while White was 2-3 in the game with two RBIs and a run scored. Moon drove in a run of his own. Osburn was 1-3 with a pair of RBIs, while Weller scored twice. Reese started and went five innings, striking out six, while walking just one and allowing just two earned runs to move to 2-0 on the season. Vaugh pitched a hitless sixth and seventh innings to record his second save of the season. 

The Lions scored two in the second and one each in the sixth and seventh, with another two spot in the eighth to cruise to the win in game two. Walker started and went seven innings, striking out four and allowing just two hits and two earned runs. Vaughn, Goostree and Harvey combined for the final two innings, with Harvey recording the final two outs for the save, his first of the season. Walker moves to 2-0 on the season. 

Evin Natick and Beau Phillips each had a pair of hits, while Natick drove in two. Lupo, Moon, Dusty Harper, Ewing, Natick and Zack Steadman all scored for the Lions. 

Both teams will be back at it tomorrow morning as the original start time has been pushed up to 11 am.
