Joplin, Mo. -- Missouri Southern seniors Brett Abell and Sam Ryan have been named to the 2013 NCAA Division II Central Regional All-Tournament Team, as was announced today after a vote of the media at the tournament.
Abell threw one of the best games ever pitched by a Southern pitcher in the tournament. He went 11 innings against 5th ranked Minnesota State, striking out 11 and holding the Mavericks scoreless as he exited the game with a no-decision. His 11 innings pitched tied a school-record as the Lions played 14 innings, also tying a school record. His 11 strikeouts gave him 116 on the season, extending his school record for single-season strikeouts. His 105.1 innings pitched this season is also a new single-season record at Southern.
Abell finished with 200 strikeouts in his career, just six from tying the career record at Missouri Southern. He ranks third in that category, while his 201.2 career innings pitched ranks sixth overall. His four career shutouts rank fourth all-time, as well.
Ryan went 6-11 with a pair of RBIs in the Lions' two games played in Minnesota. He was 4-6 against Minnesota State in the epic 14-inning game the two teams played, while going 2-5 with two driven in against Central Missouri.
Ryan had a walk-off three-run home run in Kansas City against No. 5 Missouri Western to give Southern the 2013 MIAA Baseball Tournament Championship. This year, Ryan finished second on the team in hitting (.343) and home runs (6) while leading the Lions with 40 RBIs.
