Southern baseball falls 7-3 to 8th ranked Central Missouri in NCAA Division II Tournament

Mankato, Minn. -- The Missouri Southern baseball team fell victim to a five-run inning from 8th ranked Central Missouri and the Lions ended their season today, losing 7-3 to the Mules in the 2013 NCAA Division II Central Region Tournament. 

Southern (34-22) started the game with a run in the top of the first when Sam Ryan drove in Michael McCoy for the game's first run. 

Lions' starter Drew Noble threw well and carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning. He left the game in the eighth and picked up the loss to fall to 7-4 on the season. He threw seven innings, striking out three, and allowing just two hits and two earned runs. 

Central (36-12) scored five runs, three earned, in the eighth inning as the Mules utilized small ball and the bunt. 

The Mules added another two runs in the top of the ninth, before the Lions scored two of their own in the bottom half of the inning. With two outs in the ninth, back-to-back singles from Michael McCoy and Dallas Burke scored McCoy, while Ryan drove in Burke in the inning, as well. 

McCoy went 3-5 in the game with two runs scored. Ryan went 2-5 with a pair of RBIs, while Tee Helsel and Burke had two hits each. Nick Doughty and Will Wagner had a hit each. Ryan Bates, David Reese and Bo Bergen threw in relief. 

The Lions end the season 34-22 overall. They were the 2013 MIAA Baseball Tournament Champoins, the first title for MSSU since 1992. They advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2001.
