Joplin, Mo. -- An RBI single through the right side for Sam Ryan lifted the Missouri Southern baseball team to its 13th-straight win and the Lions defeated visiting Washburn, 2-1 in 11 innings today at Joe Becker Stadium.
In what was a pitcher's duel throughout, the Lions (24-11, 18-9 MIAA) scored a single run in each of the eighth and 11th innings for the win.
Neither pitcher allowed a run for the first seven innings as Washburn's (6-23, 6-22 MIAA) Brad Alberts went pitch-for-pitch with the Lions' Drew Noble. Noble went eight and a third innings, striking out three and allowing just one run in the no-decision. Bo Bergen threw the final two and two thirds and allowed just one hit to pick up his third win of the season.
Alberts held the Lions scoreless till the eighth, sending Southern down in order in the fourth through the seventh innings.
The Lions got on the board, however, in the bottom of the eighth when Will Wagner singled to start the inning. He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Dane Kolkmeyer, and moved to third on a ground out. Shaun Hoover then singled up the middle scoring Wagner with what was the go-ahead run.
The Ichabods tied the game in the top of the ninth when John Stoothoff drove in Taylor Herrington.
Southern had their chance in the bottom of the ninth, but couldn't put a run on the board. The game remained tied until the 11th when Ryan's single scored McCoy with the game-winning run.
Ryan and Hoover both had RBI's for the Lions as Hoover went 2-4 on the day. McCoy and Wagner scored a run each, while Wagner, Ryan and Dallas Burke had a hit each.
The Lions will be back in action on Tuesday as Southern travels to Emporia to take on the Hornets in a double-header at 3 pm.
