Sartin's game-winning hit lifts Lions over Northeastern State, 4-3 in ten innings

Joplin, Mo. -- MJ Sartin's tenth-inning RBI single lifted the Lions over visiting Northeastern State, 4-3 in a non-conference tilt at Joe Becker Stadium tonight.

The Lions (26-16) received excellent pitching tonight, especially from the bullpen that held NSU (22-23) scoreless for the final five innings. Ryan Wheat started for Southern and went three innings, allowing just one earned run, while striking out two and walking none. Ethan Stenger threw three innings, allowing one run and striking out three, while Bo Bergen, Cody Griebling and David Reese pitched the final four innings, allowing just two hits between them. As a staff, the Lions struck out 12 batters and walked none.

The RiverHawks pitchers held the Lions to just seven hits in the game.

Southern scored first when Tee Helsel drove in Luke Acosta with a sacrifice fly in the first. NSU added a pair of runs in the top of the second, and the Lions got to within one when Thomas Wilson scored on a sacrifice fly from Michael McCoy.

Southern tied the score with a run in the bottom of the eighth when Will Wagner's sacrifice fly drove in Cullen Baxter and the Lions won in walk-off fashion when Sartin singled home Sam Ryan with the winning run.

Seven different Lions had a hit each today with Acosta, Baxter, Ryan and Wilson scoring a run each. McCoy, Helsel, Wagner, and Sartin drove in a run each.

The Lions will be in action this Friday and Saturday with double-headers each day at Lincoln University.
