Southern baseball takes the final two over Emporia State
Joplin, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern baseball team took the final two games of the series today against Emporia State after dropping the continuation of yesterday's game two. The Lions lost 9-1, before beating ESU 3-2 and 4-2.
Southern (24-16, 17-15 MIAA) had a pair of complete game wins today by seniors Cody Griebling and Ethan Stenger. Griebling went all seven in the first of today's scheduled games, striking out five, walking one and allowing just one earned run. In the second game, Stenger went all nine innings, striking out six and walking one.
Emporia (21-15, 16-12 MIAA) won the continuation of game two from yesterday as two pitchers combined to limit the Lions to just one earned run.
In game one of today's scheduled double-header, the Lions scored a run in the first on a sacrifice fly from Teel Helsel, driving in Luke Acosta. Southern scored two more in the fifth on a Will Wagner RBI double and an RBI single from Kolkmeyer. Kolkmeyer, Acosta and Michael McCoy had two hits each in the game.
In the game two win, Southern scored a run in each of the third and fourth innings and put the game away with two more in the fifth. MJ Sartin had an RBI single in the fourth as he went 3-3 in the game. McCoy had a pair of hits, an RBI and a run scored, while Acosta, Kolkmeyer, Baxter and Thomas Wilson had a hit each.
The Lions will step out of conference this week, with a single, nine-inning game at Northeastern State on April 19 at 2 pm.
