Lions improve to 8-0 with 9-3 win over Truman State in MIAA opener
Joplin, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern baseball team remained undefeated and defeated Truman State 9-3 tonight to open up MIAA play at Joe Becker Stadium.
The Lions (8-0, 1-0 MIAA) picked up another stellar pitching performance from Cody Griebling as the senior moved to 3-0 on the season, going eight innings and scattering nine hits, while striking out nine and walking just one. He allwed just two earned runs.
Truman (1-4, 0-1 MIAA) got on the board first with an unearned run in the second inning.
The Lions answered back, though, with two runs in the second on an RBI single from Harrison Gerber, scoring Tee Helsel and another run from Jesse Kinzey on an error. The Lions added another run in the third on another RBI single from Gerber, but broke out for four runs in the fourth.
The first four batters reached for the Lions in the fourth and Sam Ryan singled home Luke Acosta to start the scoring. Helsel grounded out to third, scoring Michael McCoy and Kinzey drove home both MJ Sartin and Ryan on an RBI single to right center.
Truman added another run in the sixth, while the Lions scored two of their own in the seventh. The Bulldogs scored one more in the eighth for the final tally.
Gerber went 2-4 with two RBIs, while Kinzey scored once and drove in two with two hits. Acosta, Ryan and Sartin all added two hits of their own, while Helsel drove in two. Bo Bergen pitched a scoreless ninth in relief.
The Lions and Bulldogs will be back in action tomorrow afternoon with a double-header beginning at 1 pm .
